Writer’s Workshop
Writer’s Workshop takes place Monday, Wednesday and Friday in the Blue Room. Writer ’s Workshop starts with a focused group meeting and then children will break-up and work independently for 20 minutes. The group meeting will sometimes consist of a game, such as “ build a person ” , “ if you can spell this, you can spell that ”. New sight words are often introduced as well as writing strategies, sounding out words and letter writing. Often a child will share their work with the group in the “ author ’s chair ”
Reader’s Workshop
Tuesdays and Thursday mornings reader’s workshop is held. During Reader’s Workshop group meetings, a story may be read and discussed. Different ideas are brought to the children’s attention for figuring out words they do not know how to read. Following the group meeting children make reading choices for 20 minutes or so. Choices may be reading games such as sight word bingo, magnetic letters and other teacher made games, focusing on letters and letter blends.
